Travelblog 2008 Memories from the Dettman household

After enjoying Christmas 007 with our outsourcing
son Kris who had just returned from travelling to Cambodia, Thailand & India, we imagined January would be restful.

Wrong! The New Year had us travelling. The whole family packed up the moving van on February 1st and battled the worst snow storm of the year to help Alex move to Toronto. He accepted a position with TD Securities, with an office in the Toronto Dominion Centre. His apartment is on the 33rd floor of a condo at the foot of the CN Tower and he can see the games playing in the Skydome when the roof is open

Before the worst of the winter’s record of 444cm of snow had fallen in Ottawa, we traveled with Ron & Nancy to CUBA for two weeks. What a gorgeous spot we were at in Cao Koko.

Have a look at what we saw in Cuba: go to Picassa.

In June, Dee’s Dad got a new hip, his third! (no, he does not have three hips, hooray!) He wasn’t in the hospital a long time, but he had his 89th birthday. Alex, Kelly and cousin Gerry had all gone to college and GRADUATED!

So many came to town in June that Dee fled in July to
Port Cartier with her brother Doug; sister Denise and Vic,
to visit Carol and Rick
. Dee’s sister Mel left to return westward to “The Fort” while the rest went eastward to “The Port”. See how Rick built the new deck with Vic & Doug and all the girls (go to dettmat.blogspot.com)

Wishing you a joyous holiday season

July will forever be remembered as my sister Liz’s son, Tim Micallef’s wedding to Armita. Tim is her youngest, but is the “TV personality par excellence” and they tied the knot at the Toronto Liberty Grand. Their wedding was truly a celebration of the century! Click “Slideshow” to see the wedding vows on video

September trip to Noranda and Malartic followed the Labour Day stay in Horwood at Ron’s beautiful camp. Follow the links to see the place where Dee was born. Home delivery was necessary in November, 1949. Dee's Dad likes to tell the story about the day he delivered his 4th born. Ron was sick and the Doc would not show up so Pepere was the stork's helper. This November the boys gave Dee the Photo below and took her to the local dancing with no stars stage show (the chicken was good)

December we travelled to Toronto again for the BILLS game. From Alex’s 33rd floor pad we saw good tickets for sale and went to the gate for bargain tickets to the Bud Lounge Windows click on underlined words and select “slideshow” to see more!

Another busy year has passed having fond memories that we wished to share with you. Dee continues to work for the City of Ottawa, Long Term Care Homes and I am still teaching at Algonquin College.

We wish for you and your family a very Merry Christmas from the Dettmans

CUBA Libra Ron Nancy Tom & Dee

Memories:
Don’t believe Rick, (Jacki’s dad, Meg’s man). He told us to go sCuba diving and we damn near died! He told us supper at the International Lugana was bad; mine was the best meal of the week. It helped to have Mo (Bo) and Sue tell us how to order (“after they forget to bring the garlic butter for your lobster, ask for it again”) Turns out Mo and Sue were government officials I’d looked up to when I was a public servant. Bo is Director of Investigations, and Ron of asis didn’t talk Investigations with him.

Meeting new friends was a highlight of the trip for me: I won’t forget birthday boy Jason, born on Valentines Day. It was our last day on Cuba before we uncovered that his “birthday gift” girl Holly was a proud member of Canada’s Armed Forces at Trenton. Do you remember Kate, Andrew and son Jack from Birmingham England? How about the Catamaram kid, Blaine Baker and his 25 bride Helen, who reminded us of common origins in Malartic. It’s a Small world, Short! Ron and Julie were on the bus coming to the hotel and on the bus leaving, what did they do in their rooms in between?

15 new friends and Frankie Avalon and Jakarta Jackie on the tours left fond memories. Worker bees, Barbara on the beds and Edourdo and Julio in the garden made it beautiful . Musical memories of “Guantanamarrow” for the fourteenth time reminds me of the shows.

Home and garden

At the end of summer the flowers were tall and so Dee took a bouquet to Pepere in the hospital. Thats a pumpkin in his lap.
Pride in our home caused us to replace the roof and gutters. Sky High put some good men to work.

Ontario trip to Wasaga & Orillia

In August 2006 and again in July 2007 we took photos of a great trip to see Liz and swim at Wasaga. Her hospitality reminds me of Papa Carl, there is nothing she wouldn't do for you.

Route 66

Travels with Tom, July 2006
Route 66 Travelblog

North Shore of the St. Lawrence past the Saguenay fjoids on Highway 138 is a trip every Canadian should take in their lifetime. The views are breathtaking and the 30 mile wide river is a scene stealer when you make a sharp curve on a 26% hill.
Dee and Tom took three ferries to get to Port Cartier, with farried results. We loved the ferry at Levis, and regained confidence on the Saguenay crossing, but the Evolution ferry put our stomaches in revolution. see the movie: http://video.google.ca/videoplay?docid=-4071544686862213900&pr=goog-sl

Splashing in the tidal flats of the frigid St Lawrence can be fun! http://video.google.ca/videoplay?docid=2434713493684808074&pr=goog-sl it was a highlight to inspect the ship wrecked on the rocks one mile out ( or so it seemed when we walked out when low tide allowed)

Senators game gave Kris a bird's eye view of the "Refereee's Alley" where all the activiity takes place between periods, and the goal judge sits during the game. Zambonee license optional.

Overtime avoided by 5.2 seconds Alfie! Jason Special sure knows how to pass to the open side of the net, n'est ce pass!

Thought we were at an Eagles game for a minute. After last season, this is where the Eagles fans hang out.

Opening with the anthems. Salute with a wink? Posted by Picasa
